CD Packaging ideas
These are some rough ideas that i have sketched out on a quick brainstorm, most of these ideas i will use but i think i will adapt some ideas when it comes to making my final package, the ideas i have on this brainstorm i will try to put them all together right away to give me what my final look like then, adjust things as i go alma step by step; every step on this brainstorm/ spider diagram is very important for me as every area needs to be as strong as the other.
My main CD package is going to be incorporated with elements of origami, because i feel from my previous experiments that it was a nice finish, paper/ card in general and then a bit of fabric to make it that extra bit different and to stand out.
I would like to use a range of techniques, for my final package a few of them being, Digital art and printing i think i have learnt so much from tutorials on youtube and even mistakes i have made while trying to create a new piece and with that i feel like i have good techniques i can use for my package; As well as computer art i would like to incorporate things i can do with my hands such as, sewing, hand drawings and stencilling because i feel that it is good to have a range of styles but also i feel that it gives me an upper hand to use my hand because i am able to do more and adjust things more quickly with my own hand.
On my CD package I'm going to use my logo a lot because as far as i have reached with my primary research i have noticed well known brands have there logo everywhere , i am going to use my logos to get my brand name recognised and to put it on labels and other accessories i may have.
My target market are for , of course my chosen artists fans which are TLC, and my aim is to try and reach out to the people they tried to reach such as Females, the youth and teens and people who are generally rebellious and do not follow what is conventional for them to follow, but that ties in with my research and my general knowledge on the band.
As well as My package i will like to have accessories to go along with my ideas, such as condoms, to run on with theme of TLC and there sexually active songs and style. badges with quirky and fun comments maybe from there song lyrics or things they may say , and if i have time a few t-shirts with the same comments and song slogans.

This was a simple toilet sign i took in college , i took it because it represented women, it is an international representaion of women, also i liked the way the head was encoperated in the original design for the coulsdon logo. This was one of my favourite images taken, and i feel that i will use this in my final outcome somehow, I created this image on photoshop by overlaying a sheet of purple onto the image ,i then turned down the opacity, after that i put a gaussian blur on it to blur our the image, i then duplicated the original image another, clicked the eye to make the duplicate invisible, and then merged visible after that i made the duplicate visible agiain, and used the rubler tool to rub out areas of main sign to make it clearer.I liked the way this image turned out and i am planning on using this in my final outcome perhaps on the inlay.
This ia a condom in which i went around the whole college to look for, i like this design and logo of the condom because it is simple yet iconic, and is recognised world wild as an established condom brand, i thought this image goes really well with chosen artists of TLC who were group who promoted safe sex and that is an important/crucial aspect of my project because in my eyes thats what i saw them represent. To create this image i wanted to focus on line and shape to do this i took away the colour by saturating it then i sparpened the image to create a more defiant line, i added the burnt looking parts in the corner to make the image more authentic looking, i don't thing i will use this image in my final but i will use aspects of the condom.
This was an image i took of the mike because it was a basic representation for a singer

Packaging research
When i was looking for new and creative ideas, for my package i saw a many packages i liked theses were the two that i really liked, i liked both of them because as you open the package the CD comes up, i would like to adapt that into my design, because i feel that this type of design gives a creative edge to any design and every artist no matter what the genre.
This was the first design i saw , i first noticed it when i researched nokia's CD package they had the package to open in this way, this type of mechanism is called a "Jake box" as you open the package the CD ever so slightly pops out , i think this peice of paper mechanism is really intruging.
E.G= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3iCyfXX7Gk
This is the second paper mechanism i saw although this peice is alot more simple, i feel that i can do alot more to encorperate it with my own personal style.

Themed Photoshoot
These are some pictures me and my partner took, we tried to take pictures of things which we saw in the music videos and also the things we felt represented our theme, we needed pictures that we could possibly use on our album cover, to edit and possibly turn into abstracts, or even takeparts of the image out to create a new image altogether.
The images i took did not all represent my artist but represented music , i picked my partner because i hoped that she would have some good ideas of photos to take, because her artist was Rhianna also a female artist , i thought it would be a good idea to see the things we could photograph to use.
My aim during this photoshoot was to take clear images without anything else to specific in the background so therefore it would be easy to crop out or to hide it with different techniques i'd plan to use later on for effect.

Inlays and cover books and binding*
I have been looking at different CD packages and the way they fold ,so today I created an album cover inlay like this (below)
Stitched Stapled
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NO.3
I created a basic cover book with pages 20x30 cm i created a 20 pages this size and hole punched a hole inside there and then threaded an elastic band through and an elastic band at the end to create a closing for the book, a simple but effective idea.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NO.4
I created this star book using , five pieces of square paper 10X10 cm two more pieces of paper 1.5 cm bigger than the first pieces, and then two more pieces of square paper double the six of the firs pieces , i followed some instructions online to create this on, http://poppytalk.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/star-book-tutorial-by-roughdraftbooks.html and these were my outcomes.
NO.1
First i created the cover of the inlay 12X24 cm folded that in half and then created another one 24 X24 cm folded that in half twice to create a square the same size as the 12x 24 cm piece and that was it. This was created this way so that i can have a cover and then when you open it big, it could be a poster.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NO.2
NO.2
I created a 12x 24 cm piece sheet i copied that size 4 times and then stapled it to create a mini booklet inlay(below). This piece is created so if i wanted to have other information and pictures inside, to create an inlay book. I created two of theses on stapled and one stitched to show different ways of binding the pages together.

Surface Pattern*
Technique 1
This was the first piece i created using a tutorial from youtube called how to make grunge effects, i think that maybe if i chose a different background colour rather than green it may have come out better, i don't really like this effect due to it making the main picture unclear, but maybe i will re try this effect in later times, or maybe i'll adapt this technique to fit into something i may want to do. the original photo is below.
Technique 2
This image i created using the repeat tool, gradient and stamp tool, i really like the way this pattern looks because it looks like a piece of textile, instead of computer work, i also think that it represents my chosen artists with the bright colours and the stamp which was previously created of a face i like the way the image does not look like that, i may try out this technique again but this time use my logo as a stamp instead the face. I will defiantly consider using this technique in my final out come for my CD packaging.
Technique 3
I also created this piece by using a youtube tutorial, i really liked the way this looked but i don't feel it could represent my artists in anyway so i don't think i will use this to create my album cove or my inlay cover, creating this also was very time consuming for me, so i may use it in a next project but not this project.
Technique 4
I created this piece using duplicate and rotate tool, this was a really simple technique but yet really effective, i chose a font which was fun and simple to mix in with theme, i may use some of these techniques used to create this image but not this exact outcome.Monday, 17 September 2012
packaging experiments and packaging analysis
This CD package is for Nokia a mobile company. When i first saw this package it really caught my eye because of the way the it is folded into the box. It really makes it look futuristic , such as technology usually is.
An easy access to the it was one of the outcomes. The designer made folds in which the it would hold and be secure as if it was a in CD holder, the way it is presented is very technical . This will catch peoples attention, also making it look attractive. The material used for this packaging was card, the technique used was Oragami.
The colours used in this packaging are simple. A plain white background with a stripe containing a gradient witht the company logo within it. The logo type is a wordmark, its a plain black with the gradient of white and black in te background. It makes the logo stand out. Its simple which is effective. Together with the wordmark logo and the stripe, it makes the whole design simple and elegant.
Further more, the packaging can be adapted with other products like gameing, this again tells us the they are linked witht the future, but also, its make the whole design look cool and exciting.

I tried to look i could not for the desighner of this CD packaging but i could not find them any where i will still try and look out for them . The piece of work is an CD cover for an album called 'VH1 50 Greatest hip hop artists', that was released in around 2008. I chose to analyse this piece because I liked the style that has been used and the effect using the brown cardboard , it fits in well with the theme of the year genre because people used to use cardbourd boxes to breakdance on, for competitions or just to raise some money.
I guessed from looking at the album package that it was a hip hop because of the closed box made into an old stereo which is an iconic image from this time the late 80's. I knew that VH1 is an american music channel based in New York . I researched thuther into this album cover to find out that the theme of this piece is American Urban culture, i thought that the artist did well to represent the style of hip hop music through the images, stickers and style or packaging.
Printed onto the cardboard box, the artist used a stencil effect only black to give the packaging a street style effect to give it more of the esscence of the theme, i think it is really simple yet effective because, hip hop genre throughout the ages has derived from a poor background , where anything and everything you could use to make something else they would so, hip hop was very simple but effective and that is the way this packaging has come accross to me.
I wanted to investigate this album package because it's whole theme came out of the late 80's early 90' just as my chosen artists this was there time were they made it big and alos there genre of music was hip hop so i saw alot of comparisons and areas which i could work on with my package.
These are some of my quick album cover experiments i done to give me some ideas , and also a starting point for me to see were i would want to go with my ideas and what angles i may want to take, or even if i cold take a thew concepts of these and use them in my final package.
When i first saw this video on youtube how to create this package i thought it looked nice, after i made it my first impression was that it looks like an album package for perhaps a classical music artist or someone who does opera, it did not represent my artists which were hip hop artist at all, i felt this way because the package looked fresh and neat ;that is my perception of classical music.
I felt that maybe if i put imagery and text which match my artist such as my abstract logo and images of the artist and styled it the way that i wanted that it may look good but still it was not the best if felt that i could do.
This was the first Album package i done i really like this almbum cover because i felt it was simple, and i feel that when it is simple it is really good, also it being made out of paper would mean that the resourses would be very easy to get hold of so i could keep on trying to practice this package to perfect it, the only problem i saw was that i could not see the bigger picture i never saw past this oragami envelope anything else to encorperate with my artists .
To create this package all i used was an
A4 peice of paper and then folded it in all the ways that the instructions said just like oragami, i think this package could be very effectve for another genre of music but it was not for me in this time.
This was the second
